Description

Local furniture maker Backhouse designed and produced some of New Zealand's most premium furniture. The company sold its work through leading high end boutiques and department stores like Kirkalde & Stains in Wellington and Smith & Caughey in Auckland. While most New Zealand makers used more affordable timbers like mahogany, Backhouse followed international trends and embraced the premium timbers favoured by the Danish makers, Teak and Rosewood.

This stunning table is made from rare and exotic Rosewood. It is likely a custom commission for a wealthy client wanting the most premium table available. The design showcases the deep understanding and respect founder and designer Joe Backhouse had for modern Scandinavian design. Elegant proportions and a refined lightness of form define the design.
