Pair of Grant Featherston 'Relaxation' Chairs
This stunning early mid century chair perfectly captures the elegance of the curve.
The influence and ground breaking work of Australian designer Grant Featherston wasn't just contained in his home country, New Zealanders also fell under the spell of his highly contemporary designs. This chair is a locally produced version of Featherston's early 'Relaxation' range of furniture, produced from 1948 to 1951.
The Relaxation series was described by Featherston in a 1948 article in Australian Home Beautiful as "...leading a shift from craft to design for the machine. Its function was to support the seated or reclining body naturally and bring a physical and psychological ease to contemporary life. This was ‘modern design' – the rational beauty of things made for use".
We absolutely love this stellar example of early organic modernism. A sleek highly curved frame of rich tiger striped oak supports an equally curvaceous floating seat. The unique design and inspired lightness of form combine to create rare and desirable classic.
