Description

The impressive 'SM65' sideboard from Danish maker Skovby is a substantial yet highly refined offering. It's a stunning design finished in luminous rosewood with a rich grain and crafted to a premium standard. We love the subtle flourishes that define this sideboard – organic handles on the sliding doors perfectly complement the sculptural drawer pulls.

Other details, like the use of book-matched horizontal grain on the front doors, really elevate this grand design. The drawers are constructed of solid wood with dovetail joinery. Inside this piece offers plenty of storage space and all of the shelves are adjustable. This is a highly memorable piece that will turn heads and suit any contemporary setting.

Skovby
Denmark
1933 - Present

Founded in 1933 by Danish cabinetmaker Thorvald Rasmussen, Skovby Møbelfabrik began as a small workshop in his mother’s home in the village of Skovby, near Galten. What started with individual commissions developed into series production by 1943, establishing the foundations of the modern furniture company. Its early output included a series of desks designed by Hans J. Wegner, reflecting the high standard of craftsmanship already present in the factory.

During the 1950s, Skovby increasingly focused on dining furniture. A teak dining suite designed by E.W. Bach was presented during the 1957 furniture exhibition in Fredericia proved particularly important. Although Skovby was not included in the official exhibition, the company displayed its furniture at a local hotel and secured its first export order from a Canadian buyer. In 1959, export agent Niels Dyrlund established an exclusive distribution agreement for Skovby products, helping the company develop a significant presence in North America.

Thorvald’s son Villy Rasmussen joined the business in 1956 and guided its transformation from a traditional workshop into a modern industrial manufacturer. A third generation followed in the 1980s when Villy’s sons, Preben and Jørgen Rasmussen, entered the company.

Vintage Skovby furniture is valued for its clean proportions, carefully selected teak and rosewood veneers, practical storage and accomplished cabinetmaking. The furniture expresses a consistent philosophy shaped by three generations of the Rasmussen family: thoughtful design, skilled production and furniture made to be used.
