Description

Before settling in New Zealand in 1985, David Trubridge and his family set out on an open ended adventure sailing the Pacific and Caribbean. The five years at sea had a major influence on David's design aesthetic and helped form a strong environmentally conscious philosophy that informs all aspects of his practice. Today, David's work is celebrated throughout the world and represented in the permanent collection of many leading international museums.

'Sling' is an elegant rocking recliner that showcases the marine influenced aesthetic that David has become known for. It won the Designers Institute of New Zealand Best Award 2002 for Best of Product Design/Furniture and was also shown in the Pacific Edge display in the Milan Fair's Salone Satellite 2002. Subsequently the Italian company Cappellini signed an agreement with David to produce Sling for the European market.

Sling is out of production but can be seen in the permanent collection of the NZ Dowse Art Museum, and your house if you purchase this rare example.

1951 - Present

David Trubridge is one of New Zealand’s most internationally acclaimed designers, renowned for his pioneering approach to sustainable lighting and furniture design. His work sits at the intersection of craftsmanship, innovation, and a deep respect for the natural world, resulting in designs that are both sculptural and purposeful.

Originally trained as a naval architect in England, David’s path into design was anything but conventional. After working as a forester, he taught himself furniture making, developing a hands-on understanding of materials and structure. A formative five-year sailing journey through the Caribbean and Pacific with his young family further shaped his worldview, instilling a lasting connection to nature that continues to inform his work today.

Now based in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, David draws inspiration from organic forms, landscapes, and marine life. His designs — particularly his iconic lighting collections — explore pattern, shadow, and form, transforming natural influences into refined, architectural pieces. Sustainability is central to his philosophy: materials are carefully selected, production processes are considered, and many designs are flat-packed to reduce environmental impact during shipping.

David Trubridge’s work is exhibited and sold worldwide and is held in prestigious museum collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. His contributions to global design have earned widespread recognition, including being named among the world’s top designers by l’Express and his appointment as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Through his practice, David Trubridge continues to challenge conventional design thinking, championing a future where beauty, responsibility, and respect for the planet coexist.
