Sven Ellekaer
Denmark
1926 - 1984

Sven Ellekaer (1926 - 1984) is one of the talented Danish architect furniture designers from the golden age of Scandinavian design. He has a significant catalogue of furniture designs, working for some of the leading Danish furniture makers of the mid-20th century. Ellekaer also produced work for other Scandinavian countries, notably Vatne Mobler of Norway and also a very memorable design for Coja of the Netherlands.

It's interesting that while Ellekaer has a rich catalogue of coveted designs, not much is known about the designer himself. It is likely due to his passing away at a relatively young age, before the resurgence of interest in mid-century Danish design. Vintage advertisements state that he is an architect, so he would have been required to complete a cabinetmakers apprenticeship before studying, most likely, at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture.

What we do have is a legacy of sophisticated and enduring furniture designed by Sven Ellekaer. He produced work for large number of Danish makers, including; Komfort, Chr Linnebergs Mobelfabrik, Jensen & Molholm, Heltborg Mobler, Rolschau Mobler, Jason Mobler. Also his lounge furniture for the Coja furniture factory in Culemborg (Netherlands) has become a sought after design classic.

While all his designs show the hand of a talented designer, Ellekaer's most coveted design is likely his unique Three Legged Easy Chair for Christian Linneberg Møbelfabrik in Denmark, 1962. The design was part of a larger family of lounge furniture all featuring the memorable three leg form with highly curvaceous detailing.
