Playful Gae Aulenti 'Tavolo con Ruote' Table by Fontana Arte
The Tavolo Con Ruote (table on wheels) coffee table was designed in 1980 by Italian architect-designer Gae Aulenti for FontanaArte. Aulenti was inspired by the industrial trolleys used in the FontanaArte glassworks—her design replaces the trolley’s wooden shelf with a thick bevelled sheet of glass, supported by four free-rolling industrial casters.
This piece reflects Aulenti’s design approach—bypassing formal sketches, it developed from concept to prototype. The result is a combination of industrial aesthetics and functionality. The transparent glass reduces visual weight, emphasizing the castors and making the table movable and practical.
Note: This coffee table is attributed to Aulenti by most online sources but varies from the original 1980 design through the use of sleek beech castor wheels. Aulenti also designed another documented variant with bicycle wheels in 1993 called the 'Tour' table.
Each piece is checked and carefully hand restored at our Kingsland studio workshop. Our focus is preserving the character and patina of the design while ensuring it displays beautifully in a contemporary interior.
