Description

This playful postmodern chair comes with all the hallmarks of character and biomorphic form that we love from French designer Philippe Starck. It was issued in 1985 by high end Italian avant-garde furniture maker Driade. Today it is a rare, collectable design object and an important entry in the career of one of the most celebrated contemporary designers.

The 'Von Vogelsang' Chair was created in 1985 for Cafe Rothschild, constructed with tubular steel and perforated metal sheet. This design featured in Star Trek Next Generation episodes.

1949 - Present

Renowned for his imaginative, unconventional approach, Starck has consistently challenged the boundaries of design by blending functionality with wit, elegance, and a distinct sense of playfulness. His work is instantly recognisable for its poetic minimalism and ability to elevate everyday objects into pieces of cultural significance.

Since emerging in the 1980s, Starck has collaborated with many of the world’s leading design brands, including Kartell, Flos, and Alessi, producing iconic works that have become staples of contemporary design. From the transparent Louis Ghost chair to the sculptural Juicy Salif citrus squeezer, his designs often combine technological innovation with surprising forms, making them both accessible and thought-provoking.

Beyond product design, Starck has made a significant impact in architecture and interiors, creating landmark hotels, restaurants, and private residences around the world. His projects are unified by a strong narrative sensibility, where spaces are designed not just to function, but to evoke emotion and tell a story.

Central to Starck’s philosophy is a belief that design should serve people and improve everyday life. He advocates for democratic design, making well-considered, high-quality objects available to as many people as possible, while also embracing sustainability and environmental responsibility as key drivers of innovation.

With a career defined by curiosity, experimentation, and a refusal to conform, Philippe Starck remains one of the most influential designers of his generation, continually shaping the way we live, interact, and experience the designed world.
