Sculptural Ernest Race 'Roebuck' Chair by Race Furniture
Ernest Race is considered one of the most gifted mid-century designers to emerge from the United Kingdom. In 1955 two of Race's designs, the BA3 and Antelope chair, won both Gold and Silver medals at the Salone del Milano, a first for British furniture and a high point in British design.
The Roebuck was designed by Ernest Race in 1951 as a low-cost stacking chair for café and dining venues. Its popularity resulted in it being in full production until 1968. The brilliance of this design is in its simplicity, little more than a curve of plywood and a steel rod frame, the design perfectly captures the optimistic modern aesthetic of the post war era.
Each piece is checked and carefully hand restored at our Kingsland studio workshop. Our focus is preserving the character and patina of the design while ensuring it displays beautifully in a contemporary interior.
