With human centric design and cost efficiency as a top priority, Børge Mogensen applied himself to the same kind of challenges that designers are facing today.

With human centric design and cost efficiency as a top priority, Børge Mogensen applied himself to the same kind of challenges that designers are facing today.

In order to create objects that were designed for humanity, Børge Mogensen carried out studies to document proportions and standard measures. He was also keenly aware of the need to provide affordable furniture, participating in the MoMA International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design in 1948 with Hans Wegner after the war.

Børge Mogensen is one of the designers who was leading the Danish Modern movement in the 1950s and 60s, creating simple and functional design furniture from durable materials to create a contemporary way of living in a post-war time. This prolific and accomplished designer remains a favourite among collectors, particularly the most iconic 'Spanish Chair' and 'Hunting Chair'. His storage pieces are also highly recognisable and collectable with appealing round metal cabinetry elements combined with details in the legs which offer a classical, historic reference.

His design training and career is connected to an impressive list of institutions, people and companies which all contributed to the calibre of designer that he became. After training as a designer and then an architect, Mogensen was appointed to a teaching position as an assistant to legendary designer, Professor Kaare Klint as his assistant. Børge Mogensen worked in the studio of both Kaare Klint and Mogens Koch.

He also worked with Grethe Meyer, was design director at FDB Mobler and after a period running his own practice, succeeded Kaare Klint as designer for the Danish Museum of Decorative Art. Throughout his career, Mogensen participated in design exhibitions and competitions where he presented prototypes and design concepts which were refined and then put into commercial production.

It has been our privilege to represent a number of designs from such a celebrated architect/designer over the last decade. Currently we have two items available, see below for details.

From
Børge Mogensen

Mogensen’s ideal was functional furniture with a restrained aesthetic. He believed that furniture should create a sense of tranquillity, and have a modest appearance that encourages people to live their lives unpretentiously.
