Rare New Zealand Design showcased in the Scott Lawrie Gallery

The objects from Mr. Bigglesworthy in the collection represent two years of collecting by Dan and Emma Eagle, including rare and iconic New Zealand designs from the mid-century period together with more recent from designers of the 1990s.

The fifth New Zealand Modern Collection from Mr. Bigglesworthy is a collaborative exhibition with Scott Lawrie Gallery. The exhibition features inspiring works from local contemporary artists with a focus on materiality, form, and a keen sculptural sensibility – a natural fit with modernist design pieces.

Many of these coveted pieces feature in the permanent collections of leading museums and serious design collectors. There is also a small number of pieces from anonymous makers and designers – unsung heroes that we believe deserve a place in this collection.

A 1950s Daybed from Maples Furniture Co

The past two years have been dominated by the experience of living through a pandemic. This has brought a renewed focus on what matters most – we have realised how special it is to be connected, with a sense of place and belonging. As collectors of modern design objects we are even more aware of the unique qualities of the pieces crafted by local designers and how they have enhanced the way we live.

It has always been important to us to have an understanding of local history and the history of designed objects. New Zealand modern design was ignited by international movements (Bauhaus, De Stijl) which were quickly adopted and adapted by forwards looking artists, architects and designers who were interested in new directions following the turbulence of World War II.

The suite of pieces featured in the collection include furniture and objects by John Crichton, Rudi Schwarz, Garth Chester, Michael Payne, Grant Featherston (whose work was produced in Auckland and sold through leading furniture retailers), Bob Roukema, Marilyn Sainty, Stephane Rondel and Matthew von Sturmer.

The preview event to open our latest NZ collection will be held at the Ponsonby gallery on July 28, 2022. Enjoy a cocktail, Parrotdog Beer or Foxes Island wine and enjoy the lines and forms of New Zealand modern design. We look forward to seeing you!
