Future comes by itself, progress does not – Poul Henningsen

In studying and appreciating the work of great designers, so much of the people we admire the most are those that wrestle with materials and push them in new ways to create memorable forms and functional objects, creating their own distinct design language. Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) is that kind of designer, described by Danish lighting maker Louis Poulsen as being driven to 'tame' light.

Henningsen's work in lighting now dates back a hundred years with simple forms arranged in textural ways and a highly rational, studied approach. His innovative solutions with layered lighting allowed lamps to create illumination that was soft, even, and comfortable for the eyes, addressing the harshness often associated with electric lighting. The most recognisable of his works are the deceptively simple, three layer lamps including the PH 5, which was conceptually introduced in 1926.

Henningsen's breakthrough came with his multi-shade system, which he meticulously designed to diffuse and reflect light multiple times before it reached the surrounding environment. Henningsen achieved this by calculating the curvature and positioning of each shade to ensure that the light source remains hidden from direct view. This typically involved three or more concentric shades, each carefully positioned and curved to ensure that the light source remained hidden from direct view. By doing so, the light was directed downward and outward, bouncing off the shades and creating a harmonious distribution of both direct and indirect light.

The materials used for the shades, such as opal glass or metal, played a crucial role in this process. They were selected for their ability to diffuse light effectively, reducing glare and producing a soft, ambient glow. This approach not only minimised eye strain but also enhanced the aesthetic quality of the illuminated space. One hundred years later, the designs remain in production and remain relevant to a contemporary interior.

We are pleased to introduce a suite of Poul Henningsen's PH 4½ - 4 Pendant Lamps and PH 4½ - 3½ Table Lamps which are currently on view at our gallery space. Please contact us if you are considering one of these investment pieces for your home or commercial space.
