Arne Wahl Iversen was Born in Nyborg, Denmark on November 9th, 1927. He was inspired by his father’s furniture shop and began his career by completing a cabinetmaker’s apprenticeship. He then studied at the Odense Technical School and later at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen under Kaare Klint. By age 25, he had opened his own workshop in Nyborg.
Arne Wahl Iversen regularly participated at the yearly Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition and won awards in 1953, 1955 and 1956 (Wikipedia). This success attracted the attention of Ikea founder Ingvar Kamprad who invited him to design furniture for the Swedish retailer in 1957. Arne Wahl Iversen designed for Ikea for around 7 years creating many highly successful and affordable furniture ranges.
Over his career, Arne Wahl Iversen worked with several leading Danish manufacturers and cabinet makers including Komfort, Vinde Møbelfabrik, and Hans Hansen. His designs, particularly in teak and rosewood, reflected the clean lines and quality craftsmanship of mid-century Scandinavian design.
One of Arne Wahl Iversen’s most celebrated moments came in 1968 when his Bedroom No. 92 by Vinde Møbelfabrik was shown at the Geneva Furniture Fair. It was purchased by Prince Rainier of Monaco and Grace Kelly. Having a Prince and a prominent Movie Star as clients contributed to his designs becoming successful in the American market.
Today, Arne Wahl Iversen’s furniture is highly sought after for its refined simplicity, thoughtful proportions, and lasting quality. His contributions remain an important part of the mid-century Scandinavian design legacy.
