Illum Wikkelsø 'ML91' Scissor-Leg Armchair and Ottoman by Mikael Laursen.

While many of his contemporaries pursued ever-slimmer profiles, Wikkelsø leaned into thicker, more sculptural timber forms that celebrated the material’s tactile strength.

A designer well known to collectors, Illum Wikkelsø (1919 - 1999) is responsible for some of Denmark's most extraordinary mid-century furniture moments. Prolific and confident, his work often features trademark styling elements which are evident in the latest piece we have added to the gallery, the 'ML91' Scissor-Leg Armchair and Ottoman by Mikael Laursen.

While many of his contemporaries pursued ever-slimmer profiles, Wikkelsø leaned into thicker, more sculptural timber forms that celebrated the material’s tactile strength. His chairs and sofas often feature solid, rounded frames where joints become expressive flourishes rather than hidden details. These generous proportions create a grounded, architectural quality, balancing organic softness with robust construction, offering a quietly confident alternative to the era’s more restrained minimalism.

The Wikkelsø estate offers access to a home made catalogue of the designers work and what stands out is the impressive range of modular furniture designs. One of the examples we’ve been impressed by and added to our own personal collection is the Capella series, produced by Niels Eilersen. Eilersen’s expertise in frame construction and upholstery made the cabinetmaker an ideal partner for Wikkelsø’s vision.

Illum Wikkelsø explored modular design as a natural extension of his interest in adaptable living and sculptural form. While he is widely known for organic seating and sculpted timber frames, his modular furniture demonstrates a forward-looking sensibility aligned with evolving post-war lifestyles. He understood that modern interiors needed flexibility, and his modular seating systems offered the ability to shape rooms around social interaction, comfort, and architectural flow.

Illum Wikkelsø explored modular design as a natural extension of his interest in adaptable living and sculptural form.

Another key production partner was Søren Willadsen Møbelfabrik, which manufactured modular lounge elements marked by deep, supportive seating and refined joinery details. These systems emphasised both sculptural presence and functional versatility, reflecting Wikkelsø’s belief that furniture should be lived with and reconfigured over time.

If you’re considering adding a piece from this designer to your home or commercial space please contact us or visit the gallery for more information. We have more designs to be added from Illum Wikkelsø from our latest Denmark shipment, in coming months.
